What are Scientist Saying?
- At the University of Guelph in Canada a group of scientists discovered that taking the protein Cadherin-22 and "hindering" it could potentially decrease the spreading of cancer cells. When tested on a patient that had brain cancer and a patient that had breast cancer the scientists found out that about 90 percent of the cells stopped spreading once they changed the protein.
- Scientists at Northwestern University have discovered a new treatment for cancer patients. They found that "RNA molecules" can make cancer cells kill themselves by provoking them.
- The start of many cancers begins with a tumor. Tumors can become very dangerous over time because they eventually start putting pressure on certain organs. Scientists at the University of Glasgow in England said that "Caspase-Independent Cell Death (CICD),"a new treatment, can destroy all tumors and eliminate the cancer cells that surround them. CICD has the potential to fight off cancer cells because it will provoke the cells to die.
- CD47,a protein, has been linked to success with shrinking cancerous tumors. This protein can cure many of the most common cancers such as breast and liver because it tricks the organs and tissues in our body to kill the cancer cells. Scientists took an immune cell and the CD47 protein and placed them under a microscope. When the "immune cell" was put next to a cancer cell it did not react but when the CD47 was put next to the cancer cell it killed the cell.
- Disulfiram is a drug that was previously used to to treat alcoholism but researchers have found that this drug can shrink tumors and cure cancer all in one. Disulfiram has been previously used on cancer patients. More than 3,000 patients taking disulfiram concluded that "the cancer death rate was 34% lower for the 1177 who stayed on the drug compared with those who stopped taking it."
- Doctors have found a new cancer treatment called “molecularly targeted therapy.” This therapy has a drug, Glivec, that will specifically target one type of cancer and kill all of the cells resulting in more lives being saved.
